Window position and visibility issues

ColorThink Pro will sometimes open windows in unexpected positions that are tough to recover from - for instance with the title bar above the menu bar, making it impossible to reposition or in some cases, the window is entirely off screen. There are some persistent issues with CTP 3 on newer macOS versions as well, especially when the menu bar is fatter than normal (higher res on MacBook Pro due to the camera notch for instance).

Sometimes these can be corrected with a quick edit to ColorThink Pro’s preferences file.

  • Quit ColorThink Pro

  • Find the ColorThink Pro 3 prefs file: (yes it has a 2 in it, a dumb, very old error)

On Mac: <your user folder>/Library/Preferences/CHROMiX ColorThink/CHROMiX ColorThink2Pro Prefs

On Windows: <your user folder>\AppData\Roaming\CHROMiX ColorThink\CHROMiX ColorThink2Pro Prefs

  • We suggest making a quick backup of the file before you edit it by copying it to your desktop or duplicating it in place.

  • The prefs file is a very simple text file in 2-lines-for-each-preference format. So you can open it into any text editor - on macOS TextEdit or BBEdit or on Windows Notepad work well but any editor should work fine.

  • As long as you remove 2 lines, the first for the preference name, the second for the value, then it will be readable by CTP with no problems. So if you find a recognizable line pair, just delete them, save the file and relaunch ColorThink Pro

  • What we sometimes suggest is to find the username and serial number lines and delete everything in the file after them. You won't likely miss any prefs other than needing to reposition some windows on first launch. If you delete the username and serial number you’ll need to enter them from your records when relaunching ColorThink

Also, ColorThink 4 is now available and much more compatible with newer OS versions.
